ACTION ALERT—OCTOBER, 2005

GOOD SHEPHERD VOICES FOR JUSTICE

Living Wage

______________________________________________________________________

Good Shepherd Voices for Justice Ministry presents justice issues every month and invites your response.   In the process of learning about and responding to these issues we believe we can grow in our awareness and deeper understanding of local, national and international needs in light of the values of the Gospels and the principles of Catholic social teaching and then act accordingly. This communal effort offers opportunities for transformation and for furthering the reign of God on earth.

With this in mind, please review this month’s issue and consider taking the recommended action.  We estimate it will take you only a few minutes to complete this action.  We encourage you also to take time to pray and reflect on the presence of God in the process.

We welcome everyone who is interested in letting their voice be heard for God’s justice – both those in the community of Good Shepherd and beyond.

BACKGROUND

In the weeks after Hurricane Rita and Hurricane Katrina, the long term results are sobering for all of us in this country.  We continue to ask how we can reach out to those whose lives have been so severely affected.  One way is to consider action on the living wage issue.

ACTION

GULF COAST WORKERS DESERVE A LIVING WAGE: As we consider hurricane Rita and Hurricane Katrina, we know that the need for rebuilding goes beyond the physical structures, we need to consider the rebuilding of lives as well.  The time has come to secure jobs for the 400,000 who lost them, and the hundreds of thousands of others who were unemployed before the hurricanes hit.  President Bush suspended the Davis-Bacon Act which would have allowed laborers to be paid the prevailing wage, which in New Orleans is $10.40 an hour.  Now contractors, including Halliburton, are free to hire workers at poverty wages.  To send a message to your members of Congress and ask that they demand that the President honor the Davis-Bacon Act go to: http://ga3.org/campaign/davisbacon.
